The Fountain Pen - a Romanian invention

Try to imagine writing your entire life with only a pencil.... not so convenient isn’t it?
in case you didn’t know…the pen was invented by a romanian profesor named Petrache Poenaru.
The Romanian inventor received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replacable ink cartridge on May 25, 1827.

NARCIS IANAU - the boy who sings like a soprano!!!

One of the revelations of the first edition of the TV show “Romania’s Got Talent”, inspired by the international show Got Talent, was a 15-year old boy, Narcis Iustin Ianau, who has a rare, countertenor voice. This type of male voice is very rare, especially without any canto lessons.

Narcis Iustin Ianau is from Bacau (the county where I was born, too), 15 years old and has rare vocal qualities (he can sing like a genuine soprano)!!!

Listen to his performance below.

Mircea Eliade - simply GREAT!

If one asked what my favourite author was, I could answer it in one second: I love Mircea Eliade!

I fall in love with him during highschool (at my elder sister's reccomandation) and I've read much of his work.

"The spirit creates especially when faced with great challenges!"
(Mircea Eliade, Ordeal by Labyrinth)

Mircea Eliade (1907 – 1986) - a  Romanian historian of religion, fiction writer, philosopher, and professor at the University of Chicago (Department of History of Religions at the University of Chicago bears his name, as proof of his vast contributions to the literature in this specialized field) - was one of that group of remarkably gifted Romanians in exile which included Constantin Brancusi, Ioan Petru Culianu, Emil Cioran, Eugen Ionescu and many others.
As a theorist of myth, Eliade ranks along with Levi-Strauss, Malinowski and Cassirer.
Eliade was an intensely prolific author of fiction and non-fiction alike, publishing over 1,300 pieces over 60 years. He earned international fame with LE MYTHE DE L'ÉTERNAL RETOUR (1949, The Myth of the Eternal Return), an interpretation of religious symbols and imagery.
I reccommend you to read some of Mircea Eliade's work. It will give you a new perspective about life!
The best known are:

The Sacred and the Profane: The Nature of Religion
Autobiograpy
Maitreyi ("La Nuit Bengali or "Bengal Night)

The Novel of Nearsighted Adolescent
Youth Without Youth
The Secret of Dr. Honigberger
With the Gypsy Girls

For me, Eliade represents a symbol of perseverance and wish for training, assertion, of the desire to dream with eyes wide open, to have the courage not only to set an ideal, but also to follow it, turning it into reality - a model for many young people fighting for their ideals, even if this requires many sacrifices to be done.

The People's House - the second largest building in the world

Claiming superlative as the world's second-largest building by surface area (after the sneakily spacious US Pentagon), The People's House  - now the Palace of Parliament - is one of Romania's biggest tourist attractions in Bucharest.
Meant to be the crowning achievement of 'Centrul Civic' or 'Civic Centre' - Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu's ambitious urban development plan - the Palace of Parliament represents one of the most extravagant and expensive building projects in the history of mankind;
Ceausescu conceived the palace as a great legacy for his Golden Epoch. It was meant to last forever; it is indestructible and was built to resist a nuclear attack.

The Palace measures 270 m by 240 m; 86 m high and 92 m below ground level. Astonishing - a building which is taller underneath the ground, we’re talking about 12 floors above level zero, and about eight, underneath (plus foundation and parking lots).
Some bewildering statistics:...
  • 1,100 rooms
  • 3,500 tonnes of crystal
  • 700,000 tonnes of steel and bronze
  • 200,000 m² of woolen carpets (the largest one weights about 4 tonnes and has 600m²)
  • 1,000.000 cubic meters of marble
  • 5,500 tonnes of cement
  • 7,000 tonnes of steel
  • 20,000 tonnes of sand
  • 1,000 tonnes of basalt

SIGHIŞOARA - the last inhabited medieval citadel in Europe

The Sighisoara Citadel is the old historic center of the town of Sighisoara (Hungarian: Segesvar, German: Schaessburg), Romania, built in the 12th century by Saxon colonists.
Sighişoara is considered to be the most beautiful and well preserved inhabited citadel in Europe, with an authentic medieval architecture and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, for its 850 year old testimony to the history and culture of the Transylvanian Saxons.
In Eastern Europe, Sighişoara is one of the few fortified towns which are still inhabited.
